Happy New Year

Happy New Year from all of us at The Calico Horse! It's January, a new year and we're bursting with ideas and so excited aabout the new fabric that will start arriving this month! January also means it's time for Road to Callifornia! We've got some wonderful quilts "under wraps" for the show and look forward to showing them in our same booth location. Hope to see you there!

January is a short month for classes because of the all the work we have to get ready for Road but we've got a couple of weeks, check out our calender of classses that will be offering.

Our first Block of the Month Block is ready for pick up, each block after this will be ready the 2nd Saturday of the Month.

There is a correction on the first block when cutting for your star using the Eleanor Burns ruler, please not that in cutting the light background fabric should be 7 1/2" instead of 7"

Happy Quilting from the Calico Horse!

Susan has been working hard on our Block of the Month, she just got it back from the quilter. I thought I would give a little peak while it is getting the binding on.We are reserving names for those who are interested. The quilt is absolutly wonderful.

Once again, Thank you for your Support!

Once again, Thank You for your Support!

Our annual Quilters for a Cure was a great success! While we scaled back our event from years past we couldn't let breast cancer awareness month pass without doing our part to raise money to find a cure. Our raffle for 2008 raised $1,740.00! Thank you for your support!! This is our 6th year in supporting The Avon Walk for Breast Cancer and Wendy. She has walked and crewed in the past but took this year off from both but not fund raising. We are so proud to be a part of $111,886.00 donated to help find a cure for breast cancer. We have several quilts, "works in progress" that you'll hear about and see in the months ahead as we continue raising funds.

Good news! We found a couple of additional quilt kits for one of our featured breast cancer raffle quilts. If you missed out on this one in the shop now is your chance and we will continue the special.

This is a beautiful quilt, the kit's original price was $70.00. For Quilters for a Cure the kit was on special for $55.00 and for each kit sold The Calico Horse donated $10.00 to The Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. So call today to take advantage of this great deal and continue to help the cause.

The Fabric of our Lives

"The Fabric of our Lives"

Friday morning as we prepared to open the shop a few minutes before ten a lady looked in the window and seeing us inside tried the door. We've never met a customer who minded a bit of vacuuming while looking at fabric so we opened the door. "Oh good, you're open!" she said and went to get others waiting in the car. In came a man and the woman and an older lady who they carefully escorted to one of our class chairs. It was hard to tell the relationship between the couple, they both referred to the older lady as mom and were intent on helping her choose fabric. Soon they showed us a wonderful civil war stack and a pattern, they were not quilters themselves, but wanted to get "mom" a project. She was here, many miles and states away from her home, a quilter, without any of her fabric or supplies. We suspect her age had brought her to live with family as she was in need of some help. Some of our questions she was able to answer and others not. She was definite on wanting to make a quilt bed size, not just a lap. Bless her heart, she just seemed very down but we found it interesting that her family had brought her to a quilt shop. But really it was no surprise, as we have so many who come through our doors for a little comfort. Soon we made our way to the cash register with her fabric, needles and thread (she hand pieces!) and her family members began telling us of the beautiful work she does with a bit of fabric and needle and thread. We packed her purchases in a bag and as she left there was a bit of spring and purpose in her step and a sparkle in her eye. Perhaps we had packed a bit of hope into that bag, too. Seeing the comfort of a visit to our shop brought that lady was a great way to start our day and it was obvious the older lady was pleased to be heading to her new home with the promise of folds of fabric and a needle and thread in her hands. We suspect no one was happier, though, than the couple that had restored some purpose and joy into their "mom."
